I did some research and found this problem affects only file on a Samba
share (at least for me). Also, I tried opening such files while in
guest mode and everything worked. My guess is, this is related to some
left-over settings from previous installations... I removed settings
and temp files
I had the same problem just after installing Ubuntu 10.04 with some Kde
applications, from the official repositories. However, I install my
extra software through a script with option -y (force yes), I'm
wondering if this might be the cause of this problem for me...

Same thing in Karmic, I'm trying to delete a test user I created, it
seems to work, but if I restart, the test user still appears in the
login screen.
Logging in with it doesn't really work, though, I get several errors
before ending up on a blank screen...

I confirm your solution works, Stefan, on my HP DV2620CA with an Nvidia

I solved my problem by uninstalling the kdesudo package, which was
installed probably when I added a KDE app to my Ubuntu installation.
Now there is only the sudo package, and evrything is back to normal...

OK... I don't know if my problem is the same as above, but I found the
sequence of action creating my problem :
- The problem arise when I load a movie DVD and play it with Kaffeine-
xine (for the DVD menus). When I eject the DVD after closing Kaffeine,
all my USB external drives unmount.

I've just installed Xubuntu 7.10 on a old HP Pavilion 6730, and I'm
encountering the exact same problem. It seems to be related to the
video card. When I switch from its native driver (i810) to a generic
driver, the terminal works. but now, I have to use that lousy screen
resolution...
