Thank you, Andrew, for a prompt answer. I used the workaround with
active-monitor already before 2.0.1. I only hoped the new bug fix
would solve this problem. It obviously helped to many others but in some
specific configurations like mine it still fails. I will patiently wait
for a smarter
I still have the problem even after updating lightdm-gtk-greeter to version

Attached is the x-0-greeter-log.

@jplandry: there is already another bug about recognizing blank DVD and
CD (bug 581925) and you can use Jonie's PPA to install patched udev. His
PPA is https://launchpad.net/~jonie/+archive/ppa. Using this version
worked for me.

jonie: after using your patched udev I got a partial success:
1. Inserting blank CD-R into my drive
2. Popup dialog appears letting me choose what I want to do with the empty CD
and blank CD icon appears on the desktop (this is a good progress comparing my
original situation)
3. Opening Brasero
After installing all 3 utilities from
https://launchpad.net/~brandonsnider/+archive/cdrtools Brasero still
reports Not enough space on the empty CD.

Anyway this drive was working well in Jaunty (I don't know if in Karmic as I
skipped this release) so from my point of view it is a regression in Lucid.
