I too am affected by this bug.
It is intermittent for me, and not immediately reproducible, however I
was able to reproduce it and grab some journalctl lines via SSH if it is
at all helpful.
I should also add that I have set gnome-tweak-tool -> Power -> Suspend
when laptop lid closed -> Off
And
journalctl -f via ssh, showing opening and closing the lid while in this
"frozen" condition.

The issue is with suspend. It suspends perfectly if I just boot up and
immediately try it. If I work on a project in vs code for a couple
hours, it almost always freezes.

Just want to throw a comment on here too. We are also effected by this.
We are in the process of switching to KVM and lose thin/sparse disks on
live migration. Unfortunately we need this to work.
We are using:
* Ubuntu Xenial
* qemu-kvm version 2.5
* libvirt-bin version 1.3.1
* Using local storage
I'll push up a change for the docs and I've tagged this with low-
hanging-fruit so someone that wants to work on the suggestion from
comment #1 can do so. It would be similar to how the --until-complete
option works with the nova-manage db archive_deleted_rows command works.

This is a one time operation when you're upgrading to a cells v2
deployment, so while it's unfortunate it took this long in a large cloud
with several thousand instances, I'd consider this lower priority to
resolve with code at this point unless the change is trivial. Therefore
option 3, better doc

could at least see it's making progress by printing out each instance
that is being mapped while it's running.

Just happened to me, too (17.10 x64). RAM usage got up, system became
sluggish then stopped responding completely, only MagicSysRQ got me out.
After restart, the problem has left an ugly gift: syslog has grown to
6,4 GB (I won't upload that). tail syslog (repeating for at least last
100 lines):

I did a number of the steps in the link provided for debugging to the
best of my ability (i'm pretty new). Last night I had an issue with
shutdown: after running a stop job on mysql community server the system
froze on 'reboot: Power down'. I just properly turned off the i915
driver and updated gru
So, 'echo freeze | sudo tee /sys/power/state' seems to work quite
smoothly. Is there any reason NOT to use this from here on out instead
of 'systemctl suspend'. Could quite well solve my issue.

One observation that i've made: upon powering on, if I attempt to
suspend after little to no activity, ie: quickly going through Chromium,
the system is almost always able to suspend and resume thereafter.
During periods when i'm doing projects that last a couple hours using
Sublime Text, CLion, or
Upgraded to v4.15 kernel; used systemctl suspend today and couldn't
resume ~ the screen and hard drive "suspended", but the hard drive was
still running (with my laptop, a blue light indicates the hard drive is
on).

In ubuntu 16.10/17.04/17.10, handling of ntfs drives has changed compared to
14.04.5.
Now, all files on an ntfs drive are marked as executable.
This is bad for several reasons:
- it just does not make any sense, data files are not executable, windows
executables are usually not executable on lin
Please understand that this is severely affecting basic ubuntu use with ntfs
drives for basic users, while bug #453605 that is said to be the reason of the
misbehaviour has merely given more options to advanced users and was not
intended to mess up file handling in the way it presumably did.

I'm seeing the same behaviour on 16.04.3 LTS.
A quick test using 14.04 suggests that the 3.16 kernels work without
issue whilst 3.19 and later display the reported behaviour when writing
to Windows Server 2016 iSCSI targets

As per the last comment by Emanuele Cisbani (cisba), I re-installed
4.10.0-37 (the original source of video problems with synaptic.
Then did: sudo apt install --reinstall i915-4.11.6-4.10.0-dkms
And the problem is now fixed. :-)
I also ran the intel Graphics Update which didn't perform any actua
g if Intel graphics card available...

amd64 and image-extra using dpgk -i *.deb this time instead of using the
software centre I used to install the previous images. Started Ubuntu
with 4.10.0-36-generic. This slow video problem is now present. But wifi
now works.

I can confirm that booting with the 4.10.0-36-generic_4.10.0-36.40
kernel from your link cured the slow graphics fault, everything ran
smooth, back to normal. I did lose wifi though :-)

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open Files (nautilus)
2. Right-click an item in the left panel such as "Desktop"
3. Observe right-click menu has appeared.
4. Click on a menu item such as "Properties"
5. menu disappears, nothing happens.
What I expected:
