I finally had enough and decided to give Ubuntu 7.04 a try. xfs is stable in 7.04. And the entire system seems NOTICEABLY faster running 7.04 rather than 7.10. I discovered the Ubuntuzilla project, thus was able to get current TBird (and Firefox as well while I was at it) in 7.04.

I just had quite a fight with a clean install of 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon and applying the updates makes Firefox no longer start. Turned out the solution was to mark the Firefox related packages to be reinstalled. Complete details in this thread.
