... sorry, hit the wrong key. The message 'Can't read CTR while initializing i8042' is not there any more. The result is however the same: i8042: probe of i8042 failed with error -5 I attached the dmesg log. If you would like to have the apport information with this kernel please let me know.

I updated the system and went from Ubuntu kernel 2.6.32-21-generic to 2.6.32-22-generic and now the problem is solved. I can use the touchpad and keyboard again. In the dmesg log I find: serio: i8042 KBD port at 0x60,0x64 irq 1 serio: i8042 AUX port at 0x60,0x64 irq 12 I do not entirely
