Further test after closing all Dolphin windows yielded a more typical file save
time for the 200 layer project. Additional testing to be done with the 250
layer project.
The issue with Dolphin sub processes hogging system resources will affect many
other possible uses apart from Gimp file saves
Further testing suggests this is a significant/major contributor to
performance issues experienced in Gimp file saves (1971455).

Super slow file saves in
During the save it was noted the process kiosslave5 was consuming around 30 GB
of memory and a perentage of CPU time.
HW/SW specs:
RAM: 32 GB
Swap: 250-500 GB dedicated swap partition on M.2 SSD (2 different computers)
HDD: 2x WD Black 2 TB running in ext4 mdadm RAID-1 mirror (save location)

I don't have that version on any of my computers at present. Everything
is running 17.10 and it seems fine.

A bit more testing shows completely random results each time the second
configuration is applied. For example this picture shows the problems
now occurring on the Sony screen rather than the Dell screen.
The biggest effect seen on the Sony screen in this instance included
mouse position offset
Done some more playing and swapped the screens ports around on the card
to make it detect in the same order as I want them on the screen. It
basically doesn't cope with screens that have different resolutions
vertically. Attached picture of the supported positioning of the two
screens.

And here is the configuration that doesn't work. If I apply this the
Dell screen will have a part of it that is duplicated from the Sony
screen, the taskbar and even the mouse position will be offset from this
duplicate part (will try to get a screenshot of it)

the ports they are connected to on the video card they appear by default
in xfce-display-settings in the reverse to their physical layout.
On previous versions of Xubuntu there has not been any problem
If I was using sec=ntlm to connect successfully to a xenial server,
clearly that server did not have a kernel that had a problem with ntlm
security. A long time after trusty was released.

So based on some tinkering, the option sec=ntlm seems to be the issue.
Now the 16.04 servers accept this and the 17.10 servers spew, so there
has to be some difference in the handling of security settings between
the two.

I have quite a few 16.04 clients I was testing it on (VMs). It will take
me a while to go through them all and check which ones were having the
problems and what command was tried. I think they are mostly doing the
mount in /etc/fstab

The furtherest I have got is changing the cifs version number in
mount.cifs will mount the maps share read only instead of not mounting
it at all. I still haven't got to a point where it is mounted for full
read write access.

To specify a different version, mount the cifs fileysystem like this:
