after a lot of frustration, it turned out I had a corrupted file system which
xfs tools wouldn't fix, and only just yesterday evening managed to recover my
data. after that, I was able to dist-upgrade and everything worked just fine.

I'm afraid I really really needed this desktop to be ready so I can't
repeat the tests.
I'm sure you can repeat this yourself using a VM which is given a pair
of 32GB drives, going to the "try xubuntu" not "install xubuntu",
bringing up a shell and creating a partition table and making the mdraid
I've tried telling the installer to install bootloader to /dev/sda3,
/dev/md3, all sorts, it always fails.
Oh, and the installer need to run "mdadm --assemble --scan". I had to
create the mirrors outside of the installer. but the mdadm command has
to be installed too.

I've upgraded my ubuntu desktop 17.10 machine and the apparmor file was
indeed patched; I shut down my Windows VM, reloaded apparmor and
restarted libvirtd, and it was able to pass through the USB audio

I've noticed that the pairing assistant wizard remembers the PIN option
specified when run as root.
I read on the GNOME blog that GNOME 3.10 will have completely re-done Bluetooth
wizard, so this issue (which I'm also experiencing) may be resolved then. I've
installed `blueman` in the interim
