based on the information you put in the question about the file working
if you copied them locally... the issue appears to be with your share
(potentially with SAMBA) and not the file. I would lean away from
Rhythmbox being the culprit.

I noticed that the issue was with trash I deleted from one of the two
subfolders I had created. I moved all the mail from that folder to a
subfolder with a different name, emptied the trash and the trash stayed

I tested the default install on my T61p laptop and did not have the same
issue. I have attached the output of lspci. I am not sure what the
chipset differences are between the T61 and the R61 but hope this could
help determine if it is a hardware detection issue as was suggested by
the OP.

Nvidia 8800 GTS (using the restricted driver from repos)
