My symptoms were:
sudo ifdown wlan0 ; sudo ifup wlan0 would work
physically unplugging / plugging would not work.
After most recent upgrade (2007-04-02) it looks like I could:
1- remove wlan0 lines from /etc/network interfaces
2- remove the old network-monitor panel applet
3- use the
appears to be fixed ... it might be necessary for network-manager
install / upgrade scripts to intentionally strip out any wlan0
configuration from /etc/network/interfaces (which used to be necessary,
but now appears to conflict)

Status: Unconfirmed
Almost certainly regression with network manager (which appears to be
part of gnome-system-tools), possible / probably duplicate of bug #78037
... but this problem is all over the IRC channels ... hang out in
#ubuntu+1 for 10-20min and you'll see 1 or 2 people's whose wlan0's have
suddently

After upgrading from Edgy=Feisty, my Netgear MA111 USB networking stick
that uses the prism2_usb kernel module, and usually appears as wlan0- it
no longer works with the normal tools for configuring networks or
wireless, whereas it did work fine on
