Apparently the cause of the slow transfer rate is that the device is recognized
as an USB 1.1 device :(
Well, at least now ubuntu does it automatically.

A correction to the previous comment: the device is recognized, but copying
files to the device is slow as hell
(starts out fast, but drops to ~1 megabyte/sec after a few seconds).
