INITIAL SUCCESS: I was still trying to figure out how to remove the old
module and find the new driver module and install it when I remembered
something about a Package Manager of some kind, and hoped this meant
there was an automatic way to do what David T. Chen suggested.

Installation of the linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic package
did not remedy the problem. I did have to reset the levels on the
alsamixer from the Terminal. Will continue with other diagnostics from
the wiki. Thanks again, and I'll try to learn more as I go.

No change. I see there are over a thousand issues involving this, more
than 800 of them new. I have no idea if that is a large number or not.
It is hard for me to evaluate how well the sound is reproduced, if my
microphone works, etc. I do get the tiny internal speaker, so I have
hope this bug
I adjusted volume from the alsamixer from the Terminal, and now can hear
through the laptop speaker. Still no headphone,

I have just noticed the faintest sound from the laptop speaker with the
loudest videos playing. It's there, but it's extremely hard to hear.
Nothing on headphones.

resolve this. I was a poweruser/geek back in the 1900s but am rusty and
