I think the problem is with the ati device driver. If I manually edit
Xorg.conf to use the vesa driver isntead, I get to a login screen and
after that a working desktop. But if I change it back to the driver

It happens only for me if gnome-power-manager is not running. If I run
gnome-power-manager before pressing the button it appears instantly, and
presents a Hibernate button. The Hibernate button does not appear if it
hangs for a while before showing the dialog.

The same thing happened today. With the same symptoms. If I look in the
log file checkroot in /var/log/fsck I can see it has checked my root
partition (sdb2) (presumably while the blinking cursor was on my screen
(~10 minutes)):

The directory /proc/acpi/video/*/DOS does not exist (the dir
/proc/acpi/video is empty).

Update: If I, as APREA Thomas says, enable Power Manager as a Startup
Program under System-Preferences-Sessions the hang does not happen.
And all four buttons (Restart, Shutdown, Suspend and Hibernate) appear
at the bottom of the shut down dialog.

I see. I just don't understand why the priority of this bug has been set
to Low, as far as I can see it's rather significant.
Do you know any alternatives for File Roller for Ubuntu? I've been

Extract dialog) doesn't work and neither does drag-n-drop. The only

Hooray! I just booted with the newest kernel that was updated by the
Update Manager and now my keyboard works with no acpi=off. I've tried
both kernels (linux-image-2.6.20-16-generic_2.6.20-16.28_i386.deb)
