I've flashed the BIOS update via FreeDOS live cd and I'm currently on
version A10, release date 08/28/2013. At first, it did not look as if it
had done anything to fix the problem. Brightness control was still not
working.
However, I noticed a recent comment

I've double-checked, and I'm running this XPS via UEFI boot. Most of my
searching for any resolution has mentioned additions/removals from
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT, but nothing has helped there (currently only
arguments passed are "quiet splash")
