Removing both "xserver-xorg-video-intel" and deleting
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf file solved the artifact issues on my
Dell 9360 as well.

This is a massive usability problem an it is assigned to NOBODY
This is the biggest usability problem on 12.04 and a massive deterrent
for anyone upgrading from 10.04 and have a userbase which is used to
Gnome2. Less computer savvy users simply don't find the menu this way.

Since then I upgraded my system to Karmic and the problem hasn't

Clearing the /tmp folder doesn't help on my system. If I restart
immediately after the clearing, I get the same slow boot with the disk-

I also have this bug (initrd.img-2.6.28-15-generic), the disk-grinding
takes about 90 seconds.
I also tried to clean /tmp but id didn't help.
I also have VirtualBox installed.
Some nice update caused it because my boot used to be very fast after
the original install.

I have a very similar problem with a simple (non-Wubi) installation.
Activating swapfile swap hangs around for 90 seconds before
proceeding. The hard-drive is spinning like crazy in that period.
Deleting from the /tmp folder didn't help.

I have an .X0-lock file which seems to contain only the PID of the X
server. This is a very small file.
Why would be slow to delete this?
Could be that this is an ext4 filesystem problem? Does anyone here has
this problem on ext3 or ext2 (/tmp being on this kind of filesystem) ?

XDMCP is enabled and GDM works well with XMing (windows based X server). I get
a working desktop when I login using Xming from a windows machine.
