The latest imagemagick release is ImageMagick-6.4.6, but it's 6.3.7 in ubuntu
8.10 repository.
They've started to provide binary packages at the official
site(http://imagemagick.org/script/binary-releases.php#unix), but not for
ubuntu.

same here, with ubuntustudio-gdm-theme installed.
remove /etc/gdm/gdm.conf-custom can reset gdm setting, then gdm can be started
normally

the problem was solved after I delete the ~/.scim folder and relogin.
the files(pinyin_table, pinyin_phrase_index etc) under ~/.scim/pinyin
was reset.
maybe they were corrupted.
