I used the killall soffice.bin command about eight times, and then
finally the last time pdfimport, filter-binfilter and the third program
that wouldn't install ran and terminated normally. Synaptic now reports
no more broken packages, and things are back to normal

I went to the but report you mentioned, read through and methodically
went through each suggested corrective measure. Nothing changed.
Finally, I got to the suggestion to use killall soffice.bin which I

As I indicated in another email I sent to you, before I read all of your
comment above (sorry!), I have restarted my computer, gone immediately
to synaptic, looked up the broken package and attempted to upgrade it,
and it still tells me OO is running, although I have done nothing but
reboot and go
I checked through the options for OO, and Quickstarter is installed but
not enabled, so I do not have a Quickstarter icon on my taskbar, but
synaptic continues to tell me to close OO including quickstarter before
updating this package.
