This seems to be a (known, but unsolved) problem in dpkg. I'm marking
this a duplicate of bug #541595.

[Master] package failed to install/upgrade:
Public bug reported:
Current version of sox in Raring is 14.4.1-1, no Ubuntu changes.
Updating to 14.4.1-2 will improve Ubuntu by fixing bug #1086889 (certain
optional files were built but not installed).

In newer versions, error messages for under-specified raw files are more
instructive (hopefully); hence closing this. (When testing with 14.4.0+,
please note that -s and -u have been replaced with -e signed and -e
unsigned, respectively.)

This error indicates a mismatch between SoX and the installed libsox, or
any of its optional formats. Such a mismatch could be the result of an
incomplete upgrade previously; however, in 14.4.0-2, the dependencies
between the different binary packages were tightened, which should
prevent this
This (the original problem) has been fixed in SoX 14.2.0. There is no
internal limit on the number of files anymore.
There are still limits from the OS/shell:
1. The length of the command line is limited, a longer line may be silently
trimmed. To work around this, use a playlist file (.m3u)
This is a feature request (to support this RCA-VOC file format). You
could file it upstream if you are still interested in it:

Confirmed in 14.1.1-1. It seems that the package does not install
sndfile’s sub-formats. This should be fixed easily, I’ll prepare a patch
and send it to Pascal.

It won’t crash anymore, since the ffmpeg pseudo-format that provided
support for m4a (among others) has been removed in 14.4.0-5.
The recommended procedure for file types that aren’t supported in SoX is to
either use the ffmpeg/avconv command line program directly for conversions, or

Closing this as fixed, since the sox package has been depending on
libsox-fmt-base for quite a while.
Supposedly, no-one is now upgrading from an even older release to hardy,
which will reach end-of-life in a few weeks.

Apparently, the problem is not related to SoX. It appears to me that
“sox já é a versão mais nova” actually corresponds to “sox is already
the newest version”, so it seems to be installed already.
I’m moving the report to the bcmwl-kernel-source package because there
can be seen a failing
Actually, it looks very much like bug 616538.
