FWIW on my laptop (16.10) DNS queries are working as I wish it (ie
"correctly"). With VPN disconnected all queries are going to the home router
(192.168.33.1), queries for eg amachine.csl are sent there and come back
NXDOMAIN.
With VPN connected, queries on .csl are going to the remote VPN
Looks like finding out what DNS server is *asked* about a query (add
log-queries to dnsmasq.conf) is going to require another reboot : if I
restart NetworkManager then the VPN connection will also restart ..

Re "if you are using a VPN service for privacy purposes" - I have a contrary
use case. I want to use my home router as much as possible, and the VPN
(which may be my office network, or more critically a client's network) *only*
for traffic required to go there.
My understanding was that this
On 16.10 - Confirmed that after reboot, my VPN-pushed DNS comes back, on
second connection it is missing. I've logged a fresh Bug #1644098
pertaining ONLY to this issue. (Please don't pollute it with "DNS
doesn't work at all" comments!)

Discovered on Kubuntu 16.10, upgraded from a fresh install of 16.04. While I
only have the one computer to test with, the 16.10 is definitely relevant (I
did not have this problem on 16.04) but I can't tell if the upgrade is part of
it, (the upgrade may or may
This might be my a-ha moment from comment # 64 "after upgrading to
16.10, yes it is even worse, the first VPN connection works as it
should, but after disconnect/connect, DNS from VPN isn't propagated"
I came to this bug because suddenly my VPN connection wasn't working
when I *swear* it was

in the OP or comments here at all. It also has nothing to do with

Further .. I can only speak for the symptoms I am seeing of course, but I
hunted around looking for related bug posts.
My problem is quite probably this:
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=579795
I notice this with Openoffice Writer, Kubuntu 9.10. I don't think it is every
time it is hibernated.
We're not just talking slow .. it is absolutely unusable. Openoffice takes
several seconds to respond to every keypress. Restarting Openoffice.org and
reopening documents fixes it.
Has been
I can corroborate .. I notice this OpenOffice mostly - but that's probably
because I open and save documents from there a lot - but have just noticed in
Konqueror too.
It's not just slow coming up the first time - although that is disconcerting -
but in all operations: change directory,
Don't take this as confirmation that it is fixed, but I just managed to print a
PDF from Konqueror. Adobe Reader 9.2 still can't print but with different
results, given the general bad rep this version seems to have on any platform
(not just KDE) I wouldn't blame cups for this.
CUPS has
I can also confirm this happens in Kubuntu Karmic, trying to get to a
newly-set-up OpenVPN server.
It actually eventually fails to connect (for as yet unknown reason) but while
it is trying, it sets all the routing table correctly with pushed routes to LAN
.. but also sets default gateway to

Edit OpenVPN Connectionin Kubuntu Jaunty - multiple UI issues, is useless
I filed bug #368295 yesterday for the same thing (I swear I looked for similar
issues first yet here it is). That bug has a much more detailed description.
This is woeful, I see a lot of people subscribed to this area of functionality,
so someone please must be able to put a rocket under

Can't even get off the starting blocks with this one!

I agree with Olaf .. we find this very confusing. In fact we found beta2
to be almost unusable (testing Intrepid 32-bit on a Compaq Evo laptop).
I'm reserving judgement until we get to look at Beta 4, sincerly hope
that brings some sanity back. (Can't test right now, the laptop has gone

I'll add my own confirmation - Toshiba eStudio printer, Hardy 64-bit, KDE

since it has multiple confirmations and there seems to be a simple fix (ie stop
breaking it).
The good news is that Okular prints ok, so there is
I have a possible solution - look at mimeTypes.rdf (see below)
