Thanks Ken, that workaround worked for me. Here's a copy and paste of

Description: Some shit
Hit the same issue on 6th Oct 2020.
I downloaded the latest ISO from Ubuntu official website and created my
bootable USB to install the latest 20.04 version.
The crash happened towards the end of installation, 80% in progress.
My PC specs:
AMD Ryzen X3700
NVIDIA RTX 2080Ti, Gigabyte
Kingston
My organization has been struggling with this issue for ~6 months, and
the fix Christian describes in comment #44 resolved this problem for us.
I used the bionic-updates instead of xenial-updates, and enterprise
wide, the grub rescue console does NOT display anymore when loading the
PXE menu.
I am using the freecad 0.18-pre appimage on elementary juno (ubuntu
18.04) and this worked for me:
edit the .desktop file:
.local/share/applications/appimagekit_2886566de966dc3a1acbab1d9f01752f-
freecad-daily.desktop
and change the Exec line to be
Exec=sh -c "LIBGL_DRI3_DISABLE=true
the problem with password occurred. Now
it
only appears to get worse. Right now I am attempting to re-install 16.04
again. I
hope that this one is successful. It just said that installation is
complete and that I
should restart. I will see how this works.
