I think I found fix for my case. Ubuntu x64 freezes completely, intel i5.
I've noticed that when system freezes, chrome is always on.
So I've switched to firefox, and guess what, no more freezes!

tried to launch Screenshot application. This generates an icon in the
launcher and the artefacts go away.
Cannot use Alt-PrtScreen as there is no PrtScreen on the Mac keyboard.
Cannot bring the machine to sleep mode if an application is open either
