I should be clear, the problem was easily fixed by manually copying
packages during the install process. I'm not certain how upgrading the
kernel will help, because the problem was in a bad CD read. I've since
manually fixed the system and have it running well.

Same problem as Moobert. I am able to checkout the beryl repository
with:
svn checkout http://svn.beryl-project.org/beryl
from the command line.
What might be setting the svn location, the only place I can find seems
to be the binary:
/usr/bin/emerald-theme-manager
which contains the string
