ubuntu 11.10, catalyst 11.8, gnome-shell is unusable, i am staying in fallback
gnome3 mode.
with open source video driver gnome-shell works fine. (but i have to use the
catalyst to have top of opengl perfomance )

That looks like nothing with the videocard driver, for me flickering happens on
nouveau and proprietary drive as well.

At some case when Totem freezes the CPU usages even decreases down to nearly
10% (general CPU usage doesn't go over 50%), so it has to be not HW weakness
problem.

me again, i don't know is this fix or not, but now it works for me.
all that i did is just installed
Installed the following packages:
freeglut3 (2.4.0-9)
glutg3 (3.7-25)
libglut3 (3.7-25)
Hope that will help others

- ibus and ibus-table-translit packages is the part of the standart SW
included with ubuntu 9.10 Live - CD and avaliable right out of the box.
