for some time using a Slackware host and Jaunty guest. With the release
of Jaunty beta I downloaded a fresh iso and attempted to install it with
VirtualBox.

Fix, as suggested by the Debian patch, is to alter the file:
/usr/local/share/applications/mplayer.desktop
(or whatever path) and change:
Exec=gmplayer %U
to
Exec=gmplayer %F
