I installed the recent Linux Mint and the recent Xubuntu 13.10, I'm
running 3.11.0-15-generic on a netbook and this problem still exists!
I have no experience with compiling a new Kernel or anything like that.
I can temporarily fix the problem with the commands
sudo modprobe -r psmouse

No, have to correct my above statement, the bar now seems to be stuck at
4 millimetres permanently.

Minor problem in Ubuntu 9.04:
The Brightness hotkey adjusts the brightness just fine but the notifier
bar remains dark for the most time. Only at the most brightness of the
screen the bar moves to the right for three millimetres.

As the OP I would like to confirm that this bug did not appear again on my
system after some time in July. The last time the fsck routine check started it
worked as expected.

My Laptop keeps rebooting.
The system boots, grub loads, the splash screen appears and the bar moves to
the right for about a quarter of the distance. Then I get my reflexes tested
because a message appears at the bottom for a few milliseconds that says
something like
Problem almost fixed.
For the first few tries I get this message:
Fehler: DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a
reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a
reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply
timeout expired, or
(ok, I did e, down, e, single, b)
Before I could even enter fsck I got a forced check by fsck and my screen
filled up with error messages. It ended with
/dev/sda1: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY: run fsck manually
fsck died with exit status 4
Then I got errors like
bash: The: command not found
I could only solve this by switching the sources to the main server
instead of the german server. After that it found 183 packages to update
instead of 18 that I had before.

My USB mouse only works when it is plugged in during boot up. I can

The fan is pretty loud for ten minutes after booting and then finally slows
down. I have had Suse 10.3 installed before and the fan slowed done immediately
