I can confirm this bug; Unity, on the desktop, sucks.
There needs to be a more intuitive way to find the equivalent of Gnome's
Preferences and Administration.
Removing Gnome desktop was a big mistake.
The patch I recommend is to going back to Debian.

Similar problem here, Nvidia agp card on a 32bit AMD.
On a fresh install of karmic, the live CD works fine. The initial

The scanbuttond workaround worked for me too (LiDE25 scanner).
I installed the package scanbuttond with synaptic.
I entered the command

Magically both xsane and xscanimage started working,
both as a standalone and with gimp.

I was checking my X server configuration for Feisty with the command,
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

When I got to the modules part type1 was missing (I've seen type1 in other

Is the module type1 needed for ppracer to render fonts?

Bugs,
Same here. I did an upgrade from edgy to feisty using Update manager
(I have not tried this with a fresh install of feisty yet).
Ppracer just shows just a few faint dots of garbage where the menu text
should be.
I am using a Matrox g400 video card with the mga driver.
Then I used
It appears to be some problem with initializing the scanner.
I was playing around with scanimage then immediately afterwards I tried
xsane.
Xsane accidentally worked for one scan.
I have not been able to reproduce it.

Canon Lide25 (plustek backend) scanner does not scan via gui
Same here with a LiDE25. I did an upgrade from Edgy to Feisty with 'Update
Manager'.
This sanner worked fine with Edgy.
Here's the problem with Feisty using xsane:
1. Xsane starts OK
2. Xsane appears to recognise the scanner as LiDE25.
3. When I click 'Acquire preview' there is about a 30
With the same LiDE25/computer I was also able to get successful scans
with scanimage (from the sane-utils package).
To scan an image into the file image.pnm I used this:
scanimage image.pnm
This resulted in a small scanned area from the corner.
To get a full page scan I used the -x and -y

Here is what I tried (Matrox g400)
using the regular distro packages/modules.
I shut down X (killall gdm)
I used modconf to load matroxfb_base.

I shut down X again.
I used 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg' to use the kernel

I still couldn't get it to work.
I used modconf to load matroxfb_base.
I edited /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-framebuffer and commented out 'blacklist
matroxfb_base', i.e.
# blacklist matroxfb_base.
I configured xorg.conf with Option UseFBDev true .
I rebooted. I got the same very dark boot
