The add-on that is causing the problem is ubuntu firefox modifactions 0.9rc2. After I disabled this add-on, I can connect normally. The only other add-on I use is Adblock Plus with Easylist. I tried with AP on and off with Ubuntu mods on, no effect. I then turned it on and off with ubuntu mods

Umm, I managed to fix the sound problem on my own. Though I'm curious why Ubuntu has Surround Sounded muted by default, as this was the problem. It's also hidden when you check the sound parameters by the speaker on the task bar. I had to find it using preferences. -- cannot burn cd's
