I can confirm that this is a bug with that particular card/module. I removed the card and switched to integrated audio (VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller) and problems have disappeared. A possible workaround for the EMU10k1X was reported in the forums as working:

Exact same problem with a GeForce3 Ti 500. Cannot get past boot splash with nouveau driver. Works with nvidia-96 installed via jockey-text. @Jacek, when you enter recovery mode and get the list of options do not choose to continue with normal boot. I think that is why you get the blinking cursor
