This should really be high or critical since it severely limits the
ability to deploy ubuntu as a multi-user desktop system for a household
that doesn't have a resident techie. It also is such a fundamental
package that should really work 100% of the time no matter what.

nm-applet fails when
If you could still use totem-xine this wouldn't be a problem... thanks
so much for that. Anyway, the xine libraries make better use of the
graphics card to accelerate video playback and generally do better when
you just want to sit down and watch a movie in fullscreen. You could try
installing

Hello,
Thanks for being so prompt, and sorry for being so not. How should I go
about getting into a bash shell to do the commands requested? The system
completely freezes.

up. I haven't tried any special boot options. The gnome panels load and
