After upgrading from oneiric to precise mysql was initially working. I
then purged the 'old' mysql-5.1 packages and suddenly mysql could not be
started anymore. It seems 'purge' removes the file
/etc/apparmor.d/local/usr.sbin.mysqld which is still needed for
mysql-5.5 however.

I'm facing the same problem after upgrading from oneiric to precise.
The following workaround works for me till this is fixed upstream:
There is a debian package in sid which provides the latest Realtek
driver (8.029.00) including dkms configuration
