After upgrading from oneiric to precise mysql was initially working. I then purged the 'old' mysql-5.1 packages and suddenly mysql could not be started anymore. It seems 'purge' removes the file /etc/apparmor.d/local/usr.sbin.mysqld which is still needed for mysql-5.5 however.
