well, i just did something i should have done before posting this bug:
i check ed the KCharSelect.desktop file. my suspicion was confirmed;
the last line has it in two areas, instead of one:

in kde4 at least it should be EITHER Qt;KDE OR Utility;X-KDE-More,
this still isn't in intrepid. is there a reason for this?

the problem is that the programs (mostly games, afaik) that require fmod
require it because it is cross-platform. so the problem is that any
alternative that isn't cross-platform creates a barrier to it being used.
for instance, i (beta/alpha) test skulltag, a zdoom port.

I don't know that anything has changed. If something did change regarding the
icon, I would have seen it with an update.
