Ok about my problem with the display drivers:
This seems to be a very common problem for newer versions Ubuntu 12.10.
The problem seems to be caused by the new version of xserver:

I tried adding the Canonical Parners repo with no luck. I also tried
installing fglrx through the Software Center which (as Corey mentioned
with his NVIDIA card) set low resolution on my laptop monitor.

I am also experiencing this problem - the 'unity --reset' did help a
little bit not enough - windows are still not moving fluently. I have
ATI Mobility Radeon 4500 series graphic card with newest drivers
installed.

I have the problem on my laptop - after few hours the nm-applet gets up
to 390MiB. I'm using linux mint 10 x64 and the version of the applet is
0.8.3.
