Apologies. Forgot about this bug in my inbox, after 3 weeks of
traveling.
Yes, this is reproducible. The steps I provided in the description
still produce the issue, even in Jaunty. What more would you like?
Shall I create a script?

Bugs,
Hmm, this now seems to work /almost/ flawlessly for USB keys, and I
assume as well for filesystems that get mounted ad-hoc.
It still doesn't work for the use case of a file system owned by me and
mounted automatically by fstab (as suggested in the description).
I'll post a semi-script shortly.
Human script:
1. Open a terminal
# Part 1: create empty directory in $HOME, and mount different file system to
it.
# Different filesystem will exist entirely in RAM, and will take at most 5M.
$ cd ~
$ mkdir tmp_tester
$ sudo mount -t tmpfs -o size=5M,uid=1000,gid=1000 trash_test tmp_tester
#
No news. I did send the bug upstream. It's such a small issue, and one
that is likely only noticed by geeks, power nuts, or folks who haven't
yet put 2 and 2 together (and they will because they're savvy enough to
use Bittorrent or otherwise mess with large files) that I didn't worry
about it.
Blast. That would be did *not* send the bug upstream.

Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: acpi-support
Acpi-support 0.121 causes ~+10c increase in HD temp. Downgraded to acpi-
support 0.114 and the problem went away, HD temp normal, but excessive
load cycle occurs with that version. I've repeated the process of using
0.121 and downgrading to
