I have the same issue on a Kubuntu 10.10 fresh install.
And I have open a system monitor, and few seconds before the freeze, the
process ksoftirqd/0 use more cpu, from 65% to 100%..., and this also without
other software run, only a kppp (the card is not recognised from the network
manager)
The same thing is happened after a last intrepid upgrade.

Yes. I have installed today the beta 8.10, and I attempt to install the
Italian language. 2 application have crashed with this action, python
2.5 and kdesudo.

If I send a file to a user invisible, I view the trasfer status progress, and
corrected inviated, but the user in mode invisible don't receive the file and
not view any notification for it. It's a bug or a feature work correctly? IMHO
