shutting the laptop (acer 1644) directly without even asking me. some
updates fix it and then it happens again. right now powerbutton causes

i have modified both the groot line and the 2 kopt lines a couple of
times now.
this last kernel update i have become certain - the changes to both of
these values in menu.lst are edited away by the script that updates
grub.
i am sure those two lines were correct because this has happened a few
i just tried to update menu.lst manually and then did update-grub
perhaps this error message is helpful. of course im certain of the UUID - i got
it from /dev/disks/by-uuid and it seems to work in fstab every time

actually - sorry to say. i have this problem still and im on feisty.
after every resume from suspend the logout dialog is active and i have to
cancel. frequently im also told that suspend failed but thats a different bug i
guess. if this is hardware related im on acer 1640. maybe i should start
it only happens when i suspend using the powerbutton on my laptop.

a much better fix (taken from the same upstream bug report ) is to do
sudo apt-get install libgl1-mesa-dev

this is one of those bugs thats a bit hard to describe. i first noticed
it while organising my bookmarks in firefox. drag n drop was unreliable.
it actually didnt work at all most of the time. in the end i had to use
key commands ctrl-c and ctr-v
please lets bump up the importance...this is a long-standing bug and
very visible and annoying. it also seems that the fix might be quite
easy if its a package managing issue.

i just did an apt-get dist-upgrade and it removed ubuntu-desktop along
with most of gnome...
im writing this from a partition with edgy...
afaik all the packages failed because they required some patch0.26 or
i installed feisty herd 1...and from there it was impossible to upgrade
my system. it was a fresh install so i guess there was a pretty serious
bug on the livecd...
anyhow - -like you say it will hopefully not be present for herd 2 and
there is a manual fix for those who install herd 1...

Binary package hint: evolution
the other 5 icons in the left hand pane in the preferences window look
fine but the bottom one - Certificates - seems to be of a lower
resolution.
makes it look out of place and ugly...

Importance:
could the problem be that there are two UUIDs for swap...one refers to
the partition and the other refers to the swap-filesystem...
when i do mkswap it returns a new UUID for swap and no label...but when
i do 'ls -la /dev/disks/by-uuid afterwards the UUID which refers to
/dev/hda4 has not
i would just like to add that on my acer 1644 i only have one battery
which is for some reason listed as BAT1 under /proc/acpi/battery...
i assume that this is the reason why im suffering from similar problems
with gpm...when i unplug AC it always tells me 1 hour remaining (with 3
%) and then
thank you tonfa...edited fstab and conf.d resume with value from mkswap
- regenerated initrd - and now it all works...
for anybody else reading this with the same issue regenerate your initrd
with update-initramfs -u after you have edited
/etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume as tonfa described...

i reboot very infrequently but when i do it seems that swap changes its
uuid...
since swap is not activated the system will at some point grind to a
halt when i open too many apps...a normal user would think ubuntu had
crashed or is impossibly slow...
so i do

sorry - this is edgy...and ive been with edgy since knot 1...have there
been any reasons since then why the uuid should have changed?

as far as i can see in edgy and gnome 2.16 there is no disk management
tool.
this means, for example, that a user is unable to format a usb-stick.
they will often come pre-formatted as fat32 but there are many usb-
devices which a user will want in ext3 and not fat32 or
