That doesn't indicate that the beta release has become the final
release.
In my opinion it should be specified. For instance by adding release
information: your system (7.10 beta) is up to date or your system
(7.10 final release) is up to date.

I can confirm this issue. However, I didn't try and use the console. So
I don't know about that part.
In my case the window manager and running programmes visually disappear
when I click on the workspace switcher on the Gnome panel. Although all
programmes keep running, they don't show, anymore.
