I'm seeing exactly the same issue as Sam Snow. Using nVidia 177 driver
with Compiz off on Ubuntu 8.10 final.

Created USB flash drive install using a script found here:
www.pendrivelinux.com/download/u810/u810.sh. Ran updates (using package
manager icon) but the new kernel failed to install.
I know that running Ubuntu from a USB flash

This behaviour does seem a bit odd. It has kept me guessing for about a
day. What's one of the first things I want to do after installing
Ubuntu? Edit some text files...
If you want to keep the distro space down, maybe vi can be set by
default as an alias of some sort to vim?
