After changing the theme, form 'plain' to 'tango flat' or 'tango shaded'
, the game was playable (again). However, changing the theme back to
'plain' did not lead to any difference, i.e. the bug was not
reproducable. It could be that het theme changing twice has some kind of
positive effect.

from Karmic 9.10, Jaunty 9.04, Intrepid 8.10, down to Hardy 8.04: all

I did two clean installs with 9.10 karmic. In one of them, the problem
is solved, in the other one, the problem is still present. Since they
are both clean installs (no upgrades), it's ver odd. Maybe it has
something to do with the sequence in which fstab is modified and the
updates are downloaded
When I turn key mapping 'us' off, all functions mentioned seems to work.
This might be related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/478215 in which
I describe that many keys do not work, unless in 'us' mode.

Maybe the workaround (setting mapping to 'us') is not the ideal solution
for the problem. What I like to see is that grdc is working for most of
the people without changing anything. Defaulting to GNOME settings is
indeed good.
