I reinstalled the whole system and left the nvidia-glx-new package alone, and I
installed the beta driver from NVIDIA:

Yes I have the same problem here as I'm trying to get the beta drivers
installed from NVIDIA for my 9600GT.
"sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-new --remove" simply returns that it
is the latest package and will not be removed.
I did try to use EnvyNG to uninstall the NVIDIA driver which it said wa
