Starting sts on the command line. Sts starts, right after the ui has
been loaded it crashes with the following message:

I can confirm this, used the current oracle jdk and I am not able to
start sts with that as well. Error message is similar to the one with
the openJDK. Also complaining something with the libsoup-2.4.

Addendum: The access points I use encrypt with WPA and WPA2. Using
Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron I do not experience those issues. I will go and
try Stevens suggestion and post syslog and dmesg again these days. Is
there any more information I should provide?
