I have a delay as well, but could care less because - it works! Also, when I turn off wallpaper and then enable it again, there is a very long delay where I have my gdm wallpaper for about 20 seconds. Everything works normally, then out of nowhere, the compiz wallpaper plugin starts working.

OK, so with the custom kernel I had other issues like dropped wifi connections and no brightness control. Next, I compiled the new 2.6.32 kernel, and suspend still does not work with that, so I said F it and went back to Jaunty, and now everything works. So, the bug fix is: Reinstall Jaunty. --
