I noticed this bug too. Before I have edited /etc/pulse/daemon.conf to get 5.1 sounds work (just like you Neil wrote) but with 9.10 it doesn't help. I really hope this bug could be fixed before the final release, now there is no way to get sounds out with 5.1 hardware. -- Karmic 5.1 sound

Nice to hear I'm not alone with this problem. For me it helps if i add these lines below to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base but if you have pci or integrated sound card I don't believe this would help. After modifying alsa-base file I still hear some rasping but a lot of less than before. install
