I have exactly the same problem. I just tried to embed a PDF file in LibreOffice 3.6.1.2. It eventually embedded, but not as an icon, and took about 5 minutes on a very fast computer. In Word, this is painless. I often create documents which contain a lot of embedded files, pdf, code files etc.

Public bug reported: My Dell M50 laptop has an NVIDIA Quadro4 500 GoGL GPU. The restricted driver manager installs the latest 1.0-9755 driver. X won't start with this driver. nvidia-glx-legacy needs to be installed for this GPU. The restricted driver manager should install the correct driver
