It appears that I used the wrong syntax to specify the location - 'hd8'
instead of 'hd0,8'

I tried to overcome the problem by partitioning the whole of the hard
drive. That did not work, so I deleted all empty partitions.
Thereafter, the installer was able to identify the partitions and the
unused space. It allowed me to ascertain the number of sectors on the
unused space but would

Launch the xubuntu 6.10 alternate installer and select text
installer.
Proceed until reaching the screen requiring partitions to be allocated.
The installer shows the entire hard disk as the sole partition and the
only way to proceed is to wipe the existing partition table
