I experienced the same problem on Lubuntu 14.04 (automatic switching to
front mic, although no front mic connected). This workaround fixed the
problem for me as well.
Here some more thoughts:
- The problem occurred less often on my pc if I decreased the speaker volume

Forgot to mention I do NOT have ANY devices plugged into the Front Mic
Input; yet, when using Skype, it will always switch from the REAR to the
FRONT mic input after a few seconds.

I can confirm this bug on a brand new 12.10 install on an AMD 790GX
motherboard with Codec Realtek ALC887. Was impossible to use Skype due
to this bug. I'm now using the work-around posted.

Raymond, the output is below. BTW I will not have access to the problem
computer for further testing for awhile.
As for your question about front audio panel, there is only one mic and
one headphone jack.
As for jack states, I'm not sure I understand.

I'm not sure I understand your comment, Raymond. In my case there is
*no* front Mic because I've moved it to the rear. Yet during a Skype
call the system would switch from the rear Mic to the non-existent front
Mic, so the other party heard nothing from me.
After I applied Cezary's workaround
post the output of alsa-info.sh
some hda codecs (e.g. vt1708s) have two ADC but one of them connect to front
Mic and input source can select stereo mix , CD and three detectable jacks

I started to experience this bug a few days ago, after I switched my
microphone from front to rear. (Ubuntu 12.04) I want to thank the OP for
the workaround, which so far is working perfectly.

On a desktop, it is possible for a user to connected output of a TV card
to line in (blue jack) so that you can hear the output from the speaker
connected to the green jack.
This mean that user may not want to select line in as input source
automatically when the jack is plugged into blue jack
Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.
