Thanks for your comment and help - I've had a closer look at my data
files in /var/lib/mysql.
Strangely ibdata1 and ib_logfile1 were executable and contained bits of shell
scripts from a firefox and openprinting-ppds installation. I don't quite know
how things got that mixed up and will attach t

First of all, I wouldn't recommend doing an upgrade jumping a release
over, you went straight from 11.04 to 12.04 without upgrading to 11.10
first, this is not supported and can have unexpected complications.
Unfortunately looks like there's some kind of corruption in your InnoDB
files.
There's only one logfile under /var/log/mysql.
Strangely it does/did not help to deinstall mysql and reinstall it after
the update to 12.04.

Looking at the install log mysql failed to start during install/upgrade.
Please could you attach any log files in /var/log/mysql to this bug
report - hopefully this will allow us to diagnose your problem further.
