Don't see what the connection is, nvidia-current 304.43-0ubuntu2 is quite
compatible, just installed it
At least here the issue is ubuntu-drivers-common which seems to 'think'
nvidia-current is only
What is exactly the problem if one manually installs nvidia-current?

@lostinspacetime: the problem is that one has to know that s/he should do that
(and how to do that). New(er) users and Ubuntu users that have always used
jockey/Additional Drivers may not know to do that and then they would not be
aware of the possibility of using the proprietary Nvidia driver.
At least here, as mentioned, the issue seemed to begin when nvidia-current* was
set for multiple api's
So to give a little test went edited
/var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_quantal_restricted_binary-amd64_Packages
in the nvidia-current section removed the multiple, leaving
