Turns out that at least my problem has something to do with gstreamer
mp3 decoding that manifests especially with low bitrate mp3s. But even
higher bitrates pop/crackle every 1-2 seconds. Listening to the same MP3
with VLC causes no pops, Rhythmbox crackles. Tested with two soundcards
(Intel integr
I should add that it appears to happen more with songs with more of
certain frequencies. Download chesapeake.mp3 from
www.portastatic.com/sounds.html for an example (the server is down right
now, or I would give a direct link).
I'll see if disabling dmix as mentioned above helps here.

I can confirm this. I use the same audio card and when playing mp3 files
with XMMS the playback is too slow, playing mp3's with Amarok the tempo
is okay but there're crackles. I'm on Kubuntu 6.10 and avoided to do an
