Prior to the Nvidia driver being available, logon was sluggish (selecting a user and entering a password) but once logged on, the OS responded fine in 12.04. Once the Nvidia driver was available and installed, this problem was resolved. I'm hoping this might be the case for 12.10. I'm not sure

Hi Joseph Seems I spoke too soon as the black screen has now re-appeared with this install. After a couple of reboots, the screen is still black. I have applied the latest upstream kernel as suggested and the desktop is now visible again although very slow as mentioned before. As before, not sure

Hi Joseph Thanks for your reply. Having re-installed Ubuntu 12.10 (previously Kubuntu 12.10 with same problem) I was surprized that everything worked (visible desktop) although the responsiveness of the desktop was VERY slow (I guess propriatery drivers will help here when available). So I guess
