yes, I purged all mysql packages, which caused mainly many KDE apps to
end up uninstalled, such as the entire KDE-office package, but it did
not help at first. I do have it working now, but I don't know what I did

Hello bartje. If you have removed /etc/mysql/my.cnf, dpkg will not
replace it unless you purge the package. THis is because some programs
are configured simply by adding/removing config files, so their non-
existence must be preserved. Try purging all of the 'mysql*' packages
and then install again
